My stepson and I hiked the short Alpine Ridge Trail located near the Alpine Visitor Center on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. This short trail is just 1/4 mile long with 300 feet of elevation game, but don’t let the length fool you! Even though the trail is partially paved, with steps leading to the top, this is a strenuous hike base on an altitude of 11,796 at the trailhead.
At the summit, there are stunning panoramic views of the alpine tundra. In July, the tundra was littered with delicate wildflowers and tundra grasses. Winds were strong, requiring us to wear jackets. We enjoyed watching marmots play on the sunny landscape and spotted birds of prey cruising the updrafts at lower altitudes. Its not often you can look down on birds in flight!
